:I think the spokes do not really act like a fan, but rather like an aircraft wing with controlled air flow/speed on the outside of the spokes to create "lift" like conditions. A fan blade does the same thing. Contrary to popular belief, a wing does not have to have the typical thick "wing" shape to make lift. It could be flat like a board and still make lift as long as it has the right angle of attack. Ever make a paper airplane or have a balsa wood airplane? Flat wings, still flies.
